AUCH, THE CAPITAL OF GERS — 30 minutes

Auch is worth half a day. Don't miss:

Saint Mary's Cathedral — Napoleon, during his visit in 1808, is said to have remarked that it "should be able to be put in a museum." A listed historical monument, it houses one of the finest collections of stained glass in France.

The monumental staircase — 234 steps, 35 meters of elevation change, a statue of d'Artagnan at the bottom. It has connected the upper town to the lower town since 1863.

The Museum of the Americas — An exceptional, often overlooked collection of pre-Columbian art. Free admission on certain days.

The house of Henry IV — This half-timbered house in the historic center hosted Henry of Navarre in 1578, accompanied by Catherine de Medici and Marguerite de Valois.

The Italian-style theatre — Housed in the Town Hall, it is the only 18th-century theatre preserved in the Southwest. Guided tours by reservation (Auch tourist office).

The pousterles— These five medieval stepped alleyways once provided access to the river from the upper town. A sight not to be missed.

THE MOST BEAUTIFUL VILLAGES OF FRANCE

The Gers region has several such farms within an hour's drive of the farm:

La Romieu — The Collegiate Church of Saint-Pierre, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Gothic cloister, square bell tower surmounted by an octagonal tower, restored frescoes.

Larressingle — The smallest fortified village in France. Castle, Romanesque church, medieval houses, ramparts, towers, moat and drawbridge — an untouched journey into the Middle Ages.

Lavardens — An imposing castle, picturesque alleyways and a breathtaking view of the Gers hills.

Montréal-du-Gers — A bastide with its fortified walls, its pointed arch doorway, its half-timbered houses and its square with stone arcades.

Sarrant — A circular village with colourful streets and half-timbered houses nestled within the ramparts. A unique atmosphere.

FLARAN ABBEY

Founded in 1151 in the Baïse valley, Flaran Abbey is one of the best preserved in the Southwest. Cistercian architecture, cloister, medieval gardens.

THE HERREBOUC ESTATE

An 18-hectare organic vineyard in the heart of Gascony. Carine and Hélène, the two winemakers, have been crafting their wines since 2004 on the clay-limestone slopes of Château de Herrebouc. Tours and tastings available.

LAKES AND RECREATIONAL AREAS

For a cool day:

Castéra-Verduzan Lake — 7 hectares of green spaces, swimming, aquazone, pedal boats, paddles, slide, on-site catering.
